Album Cover A Week: Turnover - Peripheral Vision

This album cover marks the end of the mini-brief I had set myself of re-designing a different LP cover a week. I decided to end on one of my favourite albums, Turnover's 'Peripheral Vision'. I tried to create a feeling of detachment and isolation, keeping the composition of the image minimal. I also tried to explore a different range of media, using pencil to create initial images, and then using different paint texture brushes to add colour and fire. I've really enjoyed working in this way, and feel that my work throughout this project has progressed quite a lot compared to the first image I created.

Things I have learnt from this brief:

- Working within this format and around this subject matter is something that I enjoy doing and have fun creating images for - this is something I should continue trying to do

- I've explored different ways of laying out images, and think that this has benefited my practice, making me more aware of how I consider compisition

- I can work in a range of different ways and thats okay. I get worried that my work isn't visually consistent a lot of the time, but I dont think this is always a bad thing. It allows me to flexible and adapt my work to fit the subject matter

I had planned to start this brief a lot earlier than I did, but me starting it so close to the deadline has to led to me producing something I'm not entirley happy with. I tried to stay away from worm related imagery, thinking this would be too obvious, and instead decided to go with a parasitic type of mushroom, relating to the band being named after the parasites, Hookworms.

I enjoy the layout, and how I've labelled up the mushroom with the different names of the bands. I think maybe with a few alterations to type and in a context that was better fitting to how I draw, I could have produced something I was really happy with. I enjoyed working in this format though and feel that it's something I wouldn't mind experimenting with again. I just need to give myself more time and allow for experimentation and process, rather than relying on what I already know.

Peter & Paul x LAU

Peter and Paul x LAU Interior Brief

I decided to send off three examples of my work to be considered for the Peter and Paul x LAU Interior brief. I think the experience of working with an externally set brief would help develop my confidence in my work, and give my practice a little more substance. I also enjoy the prospect of working on something thats more of a large scale mural piece, which I'm hoping this opportunity could possibly allow for. I sent my three images along by the deadline and am now waiting to hear back on whether or not my application was successful.

Brief 4: Wall Hangings
Deadline
 28th April
Rationale: Produce a series of images consisting of a minimum of three illustrations responding to one OR three different folktales OR aspects of mystical practice, e.g. witchcraft, divination etc. Final designs will then be screen printed onto fabric and made into wall hangings. Research led brief to expand contextual and theoretical understanding. Short individual briefs with over-arching themes combine to make one larger project. Expand process and production skills. Exploration of Applied illustration with a focus on print, narrative and storytelling. Ties into Print Stuff, if successful, outcomes can be sold.

Album Cover a Week: Modern Baseball - Holy Ghost

This is the fourth cover of the alternative LP covers I've been completing over the past few weeks. I took a different approach to image making this time, utilising print skills that I built on last year. It was enjoyable to work within this format again and think that if anything, this small, self-initiated brief is allowing me to consider different approaches to image making more than I usually would. I've been worrying a lot that my work's not visually consistent, but I don't think that neccesarily has to be a bad thing, I enjoy working in different ways and figuring out which process fits a project best. Above are the monoprints I created during my morning in the print room, and below is the final design for the LP Cover.

Tote Bags

This past weekend I went to a drop in session in the printroom to give screenprinting on fabric a go. I'd ordered some tote bags way before christmas but hadn't really had the time to utilise them with the COP deadline looming. Now that's out of the way, I can finally get back to pushing my practice that little bit further.

After generating imagery from one of the LP Cover's I'd redesigned, I decided to use two of the big cat illustrations I'd been doing to screenprint onto the tote bags. The process was fairly easy to pick up, with it not differing too much from paper screenprinting and the day spent printing was all in all quite successful. I decided to print one of the designs in black (which I think works a lot better) and another design in a baby pink colour (maybe not the best idea, doesn't seem to stand out very much against the cotton).

It was really beneficial for me to create something away from a screen and that existed on more than just paper. I've love illustrated products and regularly entertain the idea of different products I could make but have been a little worried that it'll come across as me being kind of cliché in a way. Anyhow, the satisfaction of seeing my work on an actual thing has given me a bit of a push to try out some more things like this in preperation for Print Stuff in April, and also for my own personal experience/enjoyment. I will be hoping to weave applied illustration into my practice a little more and look forward to exploring it more fully throughout the rest of 603.

Album Cover a Week: The Fronts Bottoms - Going Grey

A little behind schedule, but this is the third LP cover that I've attempted. I'm really unsure with how I feel about this one, it's a different way of working for me, in terms of the visual style of the work and then in terms of it being more of a scene as oppossed to a vignette type image. Anyhow, I've had some positive feedback and would potentially like to explore this kind of image making a little more. I think as the weeks go by, my attempts at these LP covers are getting a little stronger. I hope so anyway.
